Ric moved to Los Angeles from Sydney, Australia in 1989 with his band Cry Charity, which released two albums on Polygram Records. Three years later, Markmann teamed up with Danny Pinnella to form The Charthogs, which released albums through Atlantic and Morgan Creek.
Ric began composing for film and television at that same time, even while recording and touring with the artists Heart, Chris Cornell, Eleven and Lisa Dalbello. As Matter has grown, Ric has focused exclusively on creating exciting soundtrack music for TV and film. Markmann won the 2008 and 2009 ASCAP Awards for Most Television Plays.
Danny Pinnella is a life-long musician who first gained attention playing guitar in country music clubs across the South at the tender age of 14. Danny moved from his native New York to Los Angeles as a staff songwriter for Warner Brothers where he spent several fruitful years placing dozens of songs.
Pinnella formed The Charthogs with Matter partner Ric Markmann in 1991 and released two albums with the group through Atlantic Records and Morgan Creek. Danny continued to work as a session player with artists including David Lee Roth and Kathleen Wilhoite.
Since forming Matter, Danny has infused his drive and passion into everything Matter creates. Danny won ASCAP’s Most Television Plays Award in 2008 and again in 2009.
Wag began his career with a 6-year stint, as the bass player of the widely-acclaimed L.A. band Mary’s Danish. The group produced 4 albums, toured extensively and placed songs in several film and TV soundtracks. After Mary’s Danish, Wag co-founded the band Thermador, with members of A Perfect Circle, Pearl Jam and Red Hot Chili Peppers.
Wag remained an in-demand session player recording and touring with The Beastie Boys, The Red Hot Chili Peppers, Liz Phair, Neil Diamond, Vince Neil and The Dust Brothers.
After a fateful meeting at an L.A. rehearsal studio, Wag met his future partners Markmann and Pinnella and Matter was born. Wagner won BMI awards for Most Television Plays in 2008 and 2009.
